Motorcycles in Qingdao

Hi All,

I'll be moving to Qingdao in about 6 weeks and I've got a few questions about motorcycles in Qingdao. Are they legal in there? I assume they are as I've looked online and there are tons of bikes for sale in the area. Aside from buying online, does QD have a "bike street" where a lot of shops are in one small area?

Assuming they are legal does anyone know the steps you need to take to register your bike and get a proper licence plate?

I'm living in Tianjin now and have a small bike just a little 125 cc but even that is illegal here but cops don't care. How are motorcycles regarded there? Can I expect cars to constantly try to run me off the road as they do here in Tj?

TIA for any advice you can offer.

Bill

Motorcycles and scooters are legal all over China with local traffic regulations clearly marked.
- If you have a scooter that is less than 50CCs then you do not need a Chinese drivers licence to operate it legally in Qingdao.
- If your motorcycle or scooter is more than 50CCs then you will need a valid Chinese licence to operate it legally in Qingdao.

Qingdao Traffic Police are quite lax when it comes to enforcing these regulations. However, beware that if you are caught, depending upon the mood of the officer, your bike will probably be impounded and you'll definitely have to pay a fine. Recently the Qingdao Traffic Police have begun to crack down on violators. On the bigger roads in the city, such as XiangGang, NingXia, NanJing, scooters are generally forbidden. Qingdao City is NOT bicycle or motorbike friendly!

You will be more worried about getting your bike ripped off or parking than getting hassled by the local Qingdao Traffic Cops.

If you have a valid foreign motorcycle operators licence and a residence permit you can easily obtain a Chinese Drivers Licence. Refer to: How to get a Chinese Drivers Licence in Qingdao for the details.

Qingdao's "bike street" is located at the crossing JingKou Road (京口路) and BinHe Road (宾河路) in Licang District.
